"I grew up in a very poor neighborhood here in San Juan, and we were surrounded by gangs, by drug dealers,” says José Frank, a doctor in the Dominican Republic. “It’s easy for children living in this environment to be a product of their environment."
But instead of falling prey to the threats around him, Dr. Frank connected with a local church when he was still in elementary school. That church in turn connected him with an inspirational tutor at his Compassion center and a supportive sponsor.
