Saved From the Streets

Refuge for an abandoned family

The chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic was bad enough. Deini, having lost her job, couldn’t imagine that 2020 would get any worse. That is, until her husband, the father of their five children and now the family’s sole breadwinner, announced that he was leaving.

Without giving a thought to the consequences, he returned the keys of their rented house to the landlord, announcing that he would no longer be paying rent. Only minutes later, the landlord showed up at the house and ordered Deini and her children — Fares, Samuel and their three siblings — out. Although the house was small, and the family had few possessions, it was still shelter from the streets and the threat of coronavirus.

“I didn't want to expose my children to the streets,” Deini says, “but the landlord threw us out. We had nowhere to go.” She adds, “My biggest fear was that my children would get this horrible virus

In desperation, Deini appealed to the staff at the Compassion center that Fares and Samuel attend. “I was sure they would help me. They always have,” she says.

When Deini shared about her situation, the staff immediately sought support through Highly Vulnerable Children’s Care, which allowed them to rent a house for Deini and her children until she could return to work after the pandemic and start paying rent herself.

Today, Fares, Samuel and their siblings are happy and hopeful, in a safe place, together with their mother. ”I am so grateful for everything the center has done for me and my children,” Deini says. Eight-year-old Samuel is also grateful to have a new home, especially, he says, “Because we have a space to play!”
