What makes Compassion distinct?

Christ-Centered

Our commitment to Christ

Jesus is the core of our ministry. His life and teachings shape our program — from the way we love and care for children to how we show our appreciation for our supporters. Jesus' teachings reflect the spiritual commitments of every staff member, and they guide how we love people, respect communities and cooperate with nations.

Our commitment to children

Compassion’s child development is centered on the individual child. Each one receives the holistic care he or she deserves to realize his or her full, God-given potential in life. It’s only through a careful blend of physical, social, economic and spiritual care that a child can flourish in every facet of life and transcend poverty.

Our commitment to the church

Compassion partners with local churches in each country where we serve for the most effective child development. The strategic placement of local churches, their knowledge of language and culture, and their ties to their communities make them the best suited to address the holistic needs of the children in their communities. Only they can deliver the Jesus-based teaching and comprehensive care that children in poverty deserve.

What does “holistic child care” mean?

Holistic child development means we take a long-term approach to what we do and go beyond superficial involvement in the lives of the children and families we serve. In some cases, it means we begin with prenatal care. It extends all the way through youth development.

Our child development programs provide opportunities that encourage healthy development in four core life areas — spiritual, physical, social and economic. And when it comes to child sponsorship, specifically, our Child Sponsorship Program is the only one to be validated as effective through independent, empirical research.

Compassion is committed to financial integrity and to investing your support into providing care and training for the children in our child development programs. As a Christ-centered ministry, we believe in being Christlike stewards with the investments you’ve made into young lives. We govern our spending on administration and fundraising so that the more than 2.2 million babies, children and young adults we serve around the world can effectively be released from poverty, in Jesus’ name, and be certain of their potential as representatives of his grace and love.

What is Compassion’s approach to child protection?

We believe that every child should be known, loved and protected. As an expression of that belief, we place the love, care and protection of children above all other considerations.

Protection of children is something that is central to God’s heart for them. Because children living in extreme poverty are among the most vulnerable in the world to abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation, we and our board of directors, our global partners and frontline church partners have established clear policies that are designed to promote the safety and protection of every child in our program.

What are some additional ways I can minister to children through Compassion?

While our core programs of Sponsorship, Survival and Youth Development provide most of what a child needs to thrive, external circumstances can play a big role in preventing a child from reaching his or her God-given potential.

It's in the midst of these circumstances praying for children can be a source of great spiritual hope and strength. And if you'd like to join other supporters in praying for children, you can be a part of the Compassion Prayer Network.

Financially, there are a variety of ways for generous supporters like you to help meet children's most pressing needs that go beyond what sponsorship or basic program benefits cover. Some examples of these interventions include:

These interventions work as a safety net, ensuring a struggling or afflicted child receives the help he or she needs and can complete the Compassion program to truly be released from poverty in Jesus’ name.
