What Does Life Look Like For An Orphan Living In Poverty?

Poverty can erode a child’s sense of worth. And after the loss of parents, it can seem almost impossible to feel valued and loved. For a child living in this poverty, becoming an orphan can look like:

The death of one parent and abandonment by the remaining, grief-stricken parent
The death of one parent throws the family into extreme poverty
The death of both parents from HIV-AIDS, political strife, or another tragedy

No matter the scenario, trauma from this kind of loss throws a child already living in poverty into a world of greater uncertainty. But God is faithful! He promises to sustain the fatherless. Often, He uses us to do that. He calls us to love those who suffer and to shield people from abuse.

Sponsors of orphans have a unique opportunity to be a source of stability and strength to a child who desperately needs to know that there are people in this world who care for them. Even if that person lives halfway around the world.

Twins Elisabeth and Alemtarik Twin sisters, Elisabeth and Alemtarik, were just 12 years old when they were orphaned. Their mother abandoned them as newborns, so they were raised by their loving father. Sadly, he passed away from severe asthma after a long battle with the condition.

But thanks to the support from their sponsors and the local Compassion center, they were provided additional support, love and care. Now young women, the two receive consistent provision to attend college and pursue their dreams.
