Sanjoy the Robotic Engineer

Sanjoy has always been an inventor. Even as a 6-year-old, he collected spare parts from the junkyard to use for inventions. He quickly became an expert at finding treasures where others might only see useless trash.

But in Bangladesh, inventors like Sanjoy often don’t have the resources they need to succeed due to the poverty so many are born into. Sanjoy’s situation was no exception. After his younger sister was born, his parents were reduced to eating one meal a day so their children could still have food. Thankfully, Sanjoy was registered in Compassion’s Sponsorship Program at age 4, so his center was able to ease the financial strain on his family as he grew up. But financial assistance is not the only help Sanjoy received from his center!

In high school, Sanjoy’s love for invention continued. He carried a screwdriver in his pocket everywhere he went, ready for any situation where his skills might be needed. An exciting opportunity soon came his way in 2019, when Sanjoy decided to enter an invention competition at a local science fair. A college scholarship went to the first-place inventor.

Sanjoy was determined to win by creating a robot, stating, “I want the world to know me for my inventions.” Because Sanjoy’s Compassion center had a computer lab, he was able to research the physics and chemistry needed to make his robot come to life. His computer teacher from Compassion would even stay after hours with Sanjoy so he could work as long as he wanted to.

Finally, Sanjoy completed his robot. The hydraulics for the robot’s hands were made from syringes, and it was programmed with Google Assistant software on an old smartphone chip. It could even answer questions. Though the robot missed first place by three points, Sanjoy remains undeterred from his passion for invention. He knows he can count on his Compassion center to support his future plans, which include creating a 3D printer and an automatic stove for his mom!
